Converting a pair of glasses into fame and fortune
This is a story of a start-up built around the nerdiest glasses on earth. If you wonder why and how we’re doing it, how exactly will we make millions of dollars off of it then you’re in luck. We’re planning to document and publish everything we do on our website and we have just released the first in the series. While reading – bear in mind that we both have our day-to-day jobs to attend and this is something we are doing on our free time (read: on Friday evenings).
It all begun on a day when one of us bought a pair of new glasses. For heaven’s sake – these were the nerdiest glasses ever. And still – in the first few days these awful glasses proved to be an absolute hit by enabling direct access into all kind of conversations and getting to know all kinds of new people.
One of the side effects of the glasses at social events was that people insisted on wearing them. And they gladly agreed to be photographed. Even though we didn’t think of it much, in a few months we already had hundreds of photos with people wearing the nerdiest glasses in the world.
When you have this weird stuff at your fingertips, you start wondering what to do with it. So did we – it was always a hot topic when we were having beers. On one late evening we made a deal – a bet that we are going to make a business out of it. In the morning the bet sounded so weird and impossible that we already wanted to cancel it and just buy a case of beer for each other.
After some thought we understood that we’re on to something. How can these horrible glasses be so popular? There has to be something behind it. To prove it, we decided to gather proof via finding similar cool artifacts around the world. As we are two IT nerds, we decided to conclude the investigation via a website.
We’re really competitive and so we had to choose a benchmark. After some thought we decided to go after Guy Kawasaki, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist and once an Apple evangelist.
He describes in his blog post how he created a successful business with only $12 107.09. This is so 2007 we thought. So after some more beers we know that we’re going to beat the guy by generating at least the same amount of traffic in the same time period with ten times less the money. We’re doing this with less than $1000.
This series of articles will describe how and what we’re doing. The plan is to publish a post once a week on different topics, so stay tuned. While reading – bear in mind that we both have our day-to-day jobs to attend and this is something we are doing on our free time (read: on Friday evenings).
